Why Couples Love Haapsalu, a Quiet Coast Town in Estonia
You wake up to the sunrise over the sea. You hear the water below the window. Your partner is still asleep. This is Haapsalu, a small coastal town in Estonia that very few travellers know.
People call it the "Venice of the North" because of its water and its old wooden houses. The town is 740 years old. It is 100 kilometres from Tallinn, about 1.5 hours by car. You get history, spas and calm days here, without the crowds.
So what makes Haapsalu a good place for two people in 2026? Here is what we would tell a friend.
Summer: May to August 2026
The White Nights
In an Estonian summer the sun almost never sets. These are the famous White Nights. You can walk along the Haapsalu promenade at eleven in the evening and still see clearly. The sky stays soft and pale. The old castle stands dark against it. People have walked here since the 19th century.
The Tchaikovsky bench
The composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky spent the summer of 1867 in Haapsalu. He liked the town and wrote music here. Today you can sit on the Tchaikovsky bench on the promenade. When you sit down, his music starts to play. It is a small thing, and people remember it.
Africa Beach
Africa Beach (Aafrika rand) has an odd name and a nice stretch of sand. The water in the bay is shallow and warm, so you can walk in without the usual cold shock of the Baltic. Bring something to eat, find a quiet spot and stay for the afternoon.
The White Lady Festival
Every August, at full moon, the town holds the White Lady Festival. The story says that a young woman was walled into the castle because of a forbidden love. At full moon in August, her shape is said to appear in the chapel window. The festival has concerts and theatre. It is a good weekend to visit if you like a little mystery.

The White Nights Music Festival
If you like music, come for the Haapsalu White Nights Music Festival from 2 to 5 July 2026. There are classical concerts in the castle yard, jazz evenings by the bay and small chamber concerts in the town.
Dinner at the Kuursaal
The Kuursaal is a large wooden building from the old spa years. You can eat outside with a view of the sea. It is a good place for a long dinner. In summer the light lasts almost until midnight.

Winter: November to February 2026
Spa days, a tradition since 1825
Haapsalu has been a spa town since the 1820s. It is known for its curative sea mud. Doctors across the Russian Empire once sent patients here. Winter is a good time for a spa day for two. You warm up in the sauna, then have a mud wrap, while it snows outside.
The spas still work with the same mud today. You can book a simple Estonian sauna session or a full treatment. Prices are much lower than in Western Europe.
The castle in the snow
The Haapsalu Episcopal Castle is partly a ruin. In the snow it looks like something from a story. Walk through the castle grounds on a cold morning. The bay behind it is frozen. The town is very quiet.
Warm cafés
Winter here is slow. The small cafés are warm and easy places to sit for an hour. Try kohuke, a curd bar covered in chocolate. Or order glögi, the Estonian mulled wine.
A few days without the phone
In winter there are few visitors and nothing to rush for. That makes it easy to put the phone away. Leave it in the flat, dress warmly and go outside. Most guests say this is the part they remember.

Why Haapsalu works well for two people
Quieter than Tallinn
Tallinn Old Town is often full of visitors. Haapsalu has the same old streets and far fewer people. You can hear the sea from the town centre.
Good spas, close together
Several spas are within walking distance. The treatments cost much less than in the Nordic countries or Western Europe.
Nothing you must see
There is no long list of sights here. You can walk, eat well and sit by the water. That is the whole point of the town.
Fair prices
Food, spas and travel cost less here than in most of Europe. A weekend for two stays affordable without feeling cheap.

How to get here
Haapsalu is easy to reach from Tallinn. That makes it a good choice for a weekend or a longer stay.
By car
100 km, about 1.5 hours from Tallinn along the coast road. A car is useful if you want to see the area around the town.
By bus
Buses leave Tallinn bus station through the day. The trip takes about 1 hour 40 minutes and costs around 7 to 10 euros.
The old railway station
Haapsalu station was built in 1907. Its covered platform is 216 metres long. It was once the longest in Northern Europe. It was built so that Russian nobility could leave their private train carriages without getting wet. Trains no longer run here. The building is now a railway museum and worth a short visit.
Summer or winter?
Some people come for the long light evenings in summer. Others come for the warm spa and the frozen bay in winter. Both work. What you get in Haapsalu is time. Time to talk, to walk and to do very little.
The town does not try to impress you. It is simply an old, beautiful place by the sea, and most travellers still drive past it.
