Haapsalu Spa and Mud Treatment Guide: Two Hundred Years by the Sea
For almost two hundred years, people have come to Haapsalu for one simple reason. The mud. It is soft, dark and rich in minerals. It comes from the shallow bays around the town. It built the first spa culture in Estonia, and it still works today.

How Haapsalu became a spa town
The first mud bath house opened here in 1825. A military doctor named Carl Abraham Hunnius started it. The news travelled fast. The Russian imperial family spent summers in Haapsalu, and Tchaikovsky composed here in 1867. By the end of the 19th century the town had wooden bath houses, a promenade and a Kuursaal for the evenings.
The mud itself is unusual. The bays here are shallow and low in salt. They produce a fine, organic mud called sapropel. When it is warmed, it holds the heat for a long time. That is the whole idea of a mud bath. The bays still produce it today. Only the bath houses have moved indoors.

This is the closest full spa to the flat and the easiest to add to a slow morning. It offers the classic Haapsalu mud wrap and mud bath, plus saunas, a warm pool and massage. You can buy a day pass. Book the mud treatment in advance, especially at the weekend.
Fra Mare Thalasso Spa
~15 minutes by car, on the bay
A thalasso hotel on the south shore of the bay. It has a more medical side, with physiotherapy, seawater treatments and longer wellness programmes next to the mud bath. The short drive is worth it if you want one longer session.
Haapsalu Mudaravila (the Mud Cure House)
~7 minutes on foot, on the promenade
The restored 19th-century bath house on the seafront. It is part museum and part working spa. This is the most atmospheric place in town. You do the same treatment the imperial guests did, in the same building.
A calm two-day plan
A spa stay in Haapsalu is not about filling the day. It is about turning the volume down. This plan works in every season.
Morning: coffee on the balcony, then a short walk to Hestia for a mud wrap and a sauna. Allow two calm hours. Afternoon: the promenade, the Tchaikovsky bench and lunch at Wiigi Kohvik. Evening: dinner at Kuursaal, then nothing at all. The sunset from the west balcony is enough.
On the second day, do the same with Fra Mare or the Mudaravila instead. Check-out is at 13:00 at no extra cost, so your last morning still belongs to the sea.
