Where to Eat in Haapsalu: Seven Places Worth the Walk
Haapsalu is small. You can walk from the harbour to the castle in seven minutes, and almost every good café is on that line. This is the short list we give our own guests, in the order we would use it over a weekend.
By the water
Wiigi Kohvik
The closest one to us, about five minutes along the promenade. It sits on the bank of Väike Viik, the small lake behind the seafront, with a wide terrace facing the water. Morning light on the lake, afternoon sun on the terrace, sunsets in the evening. People come here for coffee and cake as often as for a full meal. In summer it is worth booking a table.
Wiigi Bakery
The bakery side of the same house. Croissants, cinnamon buns and cakes, all baked in a small kitchen on the spot. This is the first stop of the day if you want warm pastries to bring back to the balcony. Go early. The good things sell out.
In the old town
Müüriääre Kohvik
Named after the castle wall it stands beside, about seven minutes from the flat. A warm room with an interior of its own, and one of the few places in town that works equally well for a late breakfast, a working lunch or a proper dinner.
Müüriääre Pagar
A separate bakery in the old town. Bread, buns and coffee to take with you. Useful when you want breakfast before anything else has opened.
Hapsal Dietrich
The best known address in town, in a historic house in the old centre. The kitchen has no head chef by design. The team cooks together, the fish comes from a local fisherman, the meat from a nearby farm, and the cakes are made in-house every morning. It has been a finalist in Estonian restaurant awards several times. Reserve for dinner in summer.
Vigrid
Street food at its simplest. The hamburgers here are the best in town. Good for a quick, tasty lunch between walks.
A little further
Von Gernet Kohvik
The café at Villa Friedheim, a wooden resort villa with real history behind it. The menu was built from nineteenth century court cooking, French and Slavic classics brought into a modern form, with proper French pastries alongside. Opening times are limited outside the summer season and some evenings are set menus by reservation, so check before you walk over.
How we would plan a day of it
- Morning. Pastries from Wiigi Bakery, eaten on the east balcony while the bay is still flat.
- Midday. Walk the promenade to the old town, lunch at Müüriääre Kohvik.
- Afternoon. Coffee and cake at Wiigi Kohvik, on the terrace over the lake.
- Evening. Dinner at Hapsal Dietrich, then the walk home along the water.
One practical note. This is a small town, and opening hours move with the season. Outside July and August, check each place before you set out, and book dinner a day ahead.
